Title: Prayer for Peace within the City

Scripture:

Psalm 122: 6-7
Psalm 122:6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.
7 Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.

My Reflection

As I reflect on Psalm 122:6-7, I am moved by its call to pray for peace and prosperity not just for a distant city, but for my own community in Saint Louis. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words echo in my mind: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

These words resonate as I consider the divisions between Saint Louis city and county, and within neighborhoods like Brentwood, which I have come to think of as my own “Jerusalem.” Sometimes I wonder whether my prayers should focus on my immediate surroundings or extend to the entire region. Ultimately, I realize my hopes for Brentwood cannot be separated from my hopes for all of Saint Louis. Our destinies are intertwined, and the well-being of one part of our community inevitably impacts the whole.

Living in a city marked by boundaries, both visible and invisible, I often feel the weight of these divides. Yet, I am inspired by moments of unity and collaboration, when people reach across lines to support one another. My prayer is that these moments become the norm rather than the exception. I long for a city where prosperity is shared, where peace is not limited by geography or circumstance, and where every resident feels valued and included.

Ultimately, my hope is that Saint Louis: city and county will become a place where boundaries blur, hands are extended in friendship, and all people flourish together. As we pray for peace and prosperity, may we also become agents of that peace in our daily lives, working to heal divisions and build a stronger, more compassionate community.

My Prayer:

Lord, we pray for the courage to let go of old resentments and embrace reconciliation. We ask for wisdom to see beyond differences and recognize the common humanity that binds us together. We pray for those who have not yet encountered Christ, that they may experience His love and grace.  Amen.

Thank you for the reminder to notice and take action close to home among our literal neighbors. So easy to exhaust our energy worrying about national or global issues. Fixing the injustices right in front of us is a necessary first step to renewing everything.
