The God Who Doesn’t Look Away

Scripture:

Romans 5:6
While we were still weak, at the right moment, Christ died for ungodly people. 7 It isn’t often that someone will die for a righteous person, though maybe someone might dare to die for a good person.8 But God shows his love for us, because while we were still sinners Christ died for us. 9 So, now that we have been made righteous by his blood, we can be even more certain that we will be saved from God’s wrath through him. 10 If we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son while we were still enemies, now that we have been reconciled, how much more certain is it that we will be saved by his life? 11 And not only that: we even take pride in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, the one through whom we now have a restored relationship with God.

Romans 5:6–11

Reflection:

I served a church that recited Romans 5 that says Christ died for us “while we were sinners.” That means God’s love is not a reward for growth; it’s the ground you stand on while you grow.

Oftentimes I’ve heard people say that when they “get right” or “get better” they will come to church or in some way re-engage God. However God does not require that because while we were sinners, are sinning, will be sinning, God draws near and was willing to die.
Many people carry an image of God as easily disgusted, easily disappointed, keeping a running record. But the cross reveals a different God: a God who moves toward us at our worst, not after we become impressive. The “penalty” isn’t leveraged to shame you; it’s faced so you can be reconciled without hiding.

Prayer:

When you imagine God looking at you, what expression are you seeing and what might the cross be correcting, if anything?

Reflection Question:

Lord, I want to see me as you see me. Help my spiritual eyesight to see you in me more clearly.
